When it comes to outdoor broadcasts, they don’t come much better than livestreaming off the coast of Portsmouth on a sunny summer day. We were over the moon to facilitate the live broadcast of the Clipper Round the World Race Start and, nearly a year later, the Grand Finale. This broadcast came with its fair share of challenges with the live broadcast needing to incorporate a full stage show landside before taking to the water in a 6 hour long live broadcast.
Using a combination of static and gimbal mounted cameras on land, we captured the excitement of the day as teams readied to set sail. As they made their way down to the pontoon, we incorporated on-the-go interviews as well as wide sweeping shots of the harbour, relaying all the action to LED screens situated across the site. As teams set off on their near 11 month adventure, the broadcast moved to the water with our team capturing all the action from multiple cameras and drones placed on various boats, relaying all the action out on open water right out to the Isle of Wight for both online audiences and shoreside well-wishers.
Our central studio managed all elements of the livestream providing a steady steer (forgive us for the pun) for all of the broadcast elements with us also having an outdoor broadcast van managing all live show and shoreside camera elements.
The challenge, the sunny weather and the electric atmosphere made this a broadcast to remember - and we were lucky enough to have all this and more when we did the whole thing in reverse for their welcome home!
